National Wear Red Day brings awareness to heart disease; the number 1 health problem that affects American women. According to the American Heart Association, “cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kill approximately one woman every 80 seconds.” more There are many factors known to cause cardiovascular disease including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and air pollution. Recent studies have shown there is a direct link between air pollution and heart disease, as well as stroke.
Elderly people, or people who are already struggling with heart disease, can be at a higher risk of acute, short-term effects of air pollution such as stroke and cardiovascular disease. People who live near high traffic areas, or have jobs which expose them to chemicals and pollutants, may experience long-term exposure which can increase the risk of death.
