What are "Safe" Air Pollution Levels?

Jul 20, 2024

Is there such a thing as "safe" air pollution levels for the air we breathe?

In short the answer is "no", there are no safe air pollution levels. Two recent British Medical Journal published studies looked at the elements that make up air pollution and their affects on the human body. One study focused on data from 60 million people over the age of 65 over a three year period. The study concluded that participants exposed to fine particles in the PM2.5 range had a higher risk of hospital admission as well as higher risks for other issues like cardiovascular disease. The second study found that even when PM2.5 fine particles were reduced below WHO (World Health Organization) air quality guideline limits there was still impacts to cardiovascular health.

A previous Harvard University research study found that there are no "safe" levels of pollution, at which the risk of dying early tapers off. The study suggests that air pollution cuts Americans' lives short, even at levels well below the legal limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Overall, the study found that exposure to ozone and fine particulate matter are linked to an increased risk of premature death. scientists calculated that reducing fine particle pollution by 1 microgram per cubic meter, nationwide, would save about 12,000 lives each year. By lowering ozone pollution by 1 part per billion, another 1,900 lives would be saved annually.
