According to The New York Times article, "Even Moderate Air Pollution May Lead to Lung Disease," a recent study found that relatively low levels of PM2.5 can cause a significant reduction in lung function. The study found that "each increase of five micrograms per cubic meter in PM2.5 led to 52% increase in diagnoses of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the irreversible lung disease that causes chronic obstruction to airflow."
