Allergen Report October 2024

Fall is in the air! While the leaves turn colors and the world adds pumpkin spice flavor to almost everything, the tide has finally turned for pollen allergies sufferers. People in the Southwest and Northwest can finally breathe easy as pollen is a thing of the past. Elsewhere across the country only a few plants are holding out for a last run of pollen production. Of course ragweed is hanging in there, but given the kind of plant it is that’s no surprise. But just as pollen goes out the door, cold and flu season is ready to bring back the tissues and nasal decongestant. Luckily there are ways to prepare for cold and flu season so you can bounce back if you fall ill.

For pollen sufferers here are the few typical pollens that can be found across the United States this October:

Northeast

Tree pollen: Cedar, Juniper
Grass pollen: Typically none in measurable quantity
Weeds: Dogfennel, Ragweed

Southeast

Midwest

Grass pollen: Typically none in measurable quantity
Weeds: Ragweed

South Central

It’s a great time for camping, roasting marshmallows around the fire, and cool evening walks. Make sure to keep an eye on your local outdoor air quality though as that cool call breeze can also carry contaminants. To make sure your indoor air is healthy and clean you need an Intellipure portable air purifier. Intellipure's DFS technology uses electronically enhanced filtration to attract and capture ultrafine particles (99.97% filtration down to 0.3 microns). Simply choose an Intellipure portable air purifier to experience easier breathing and better health all year long.

Allergen Report October 2024 dust mites

Dust Mite Allergies

Dust mites are all around us, all year long. But now that fall is here those who have dust mite allergies are feeling the effects a bit more. Changes in weather mean people are spending more time inside, snuggling under blankets, and turning on the heat for the first time in months. Unfortunately those are all activities that stir up dust mite allergies. If you live in a temperate area where air conditioning isn’t necessary, this might be the first time in a while that the central heating system has moved any air. That air can contain months worth of dust mites which accumulated during warmer weather. Blankets and bedding that were stored away should get a good wash before putting them out again. But it is hard to clean or remove every source of dust mite evidence which is why a good quality air purifier is the solution. The Intellipure Compact is great for bedrooms, while the Ultrafine 468 can purify rooms up to 1,200 sq/ft. When cold weather hits make sure to power up the air purification level as well as the heat.

Allergen Report October 2024 leaves

Bag Leaves For Cleaner Air

By now leaves across the country are starting to accumulate on the ground. Last month we talked about how leaf mold loves dark, damp leaf piles to grow. While taking time to rake up those leaves keeps leaf mold at bay, choosing what to do with those piled up leaves makes a difference. Many people will choose to burn leaves as a method of disposal, but doing so unleashes a witch’s brew of pollution in the air. Fine particulate matter from ash and smoke, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and more are released by burning leaf piles. Leaf smoke can also trigger asthma while tiny particles can settle in the lungs. That’s all on top of anything that might have been picked up with the leaves like paper, plastic, or noxious weeds. Instead of burning leaves this year consider alternatives like mulching, composting, or bagging them for collection by the local government if available. Then we can all breathe easier this fall.
